The Samaritan’s purse isn’t actually a purse at all, at least not in the traditional sense of a purse. The Samaritans Purse is an international relief organization founded by Dr. Bob Pierce, although it is now run by William Franklin Graham. Franklin, as he is known, is the eldest son of the Reverend Billy Graham, although he is the 4th child (he has three older sisters, and one younger brother).

For over thirty-five years, the Samaritan’s purse has been providing emergency relief to those in need, providing food, water and temporary shelter during times of crisis.

The mission statement of the Samaritan’s purse is “Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Since 1970, Samaritan’s Purse has helped meet needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing God’s love through His Son, Jesus Christ.”

The Samaritan’s purse also runs programs such as Operation Christmas Child (sending gift-filled shoe boxes around the world for Christmas), the World Medical Mission (which sends doctors, dentists, and other medical professionals on missions to hospitals and clinics in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East), the Children’s Heart Project (which matches children with heart-related medical needs in countries lacking the technology and training, and matches them with North American hospitals and surgeons that donate their time and services, and the HIV/AIDS Prescription for Hope, which organizes HIV and AIDS-related conferences and services worldwide.
