| Summary: Although Michael Kors handbags have only recently become well-known, Kors designed his first handbag shortly before his 13th birthday. Now, thirty years later, Michael Kors handbags are some of the hottest items in the designer handbag market. |
Michael Kors designed his first handbag shortly before his 13th birthday - a fringed shoulder purse that he sold to a neighbor for a few dollars. Fast forward two decades, add a couple of zeroes to that number, and you get one of the most successful designers out there.
Kors, a native New Yorker in his mid-forties, has been a household name since 1981, when he created his own label after a successful stint designing for the boutique Lothar. The collection, a blend of chic, luxurious sportswear, launched at Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman, and was an immediate success. Michael Kors handbags are a new addition to the designer’s line (they started selling three years ago), but have already gained numerous fans in Hollywood, including Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anjelica Houston, and Rene Russo. These bags (and those who love them) embody the concept that fashion can be both chic and practical.
Kors handbags are available in a variety of sizes and styles, from camel suede satchels with weaved handles to the retro Athena Tiger silk hobo bags with gold metallic trim. Totes, purses, clutches, and duffel-style bags are also available. Michael Kors is a devotee of using some variation of hardware accents, chains, and large buckles in most of his designs. His latest line includes lots of bold colors, from orange to camouflage, and focuses on the details - hand-stitching and braiding included.
Stores such as Banana Republic sell the lower-priced “Michael” line, with bags averaging $225. More exclusive designs can cost up to $1,500 and are only available through specialty retailers. Both lines are also available online through a series of authorized retailers.
In a public mission statement, Kors declared that his “company’s heritage is rooted in producing polished, sleek, sophisticated American sportswear with a jet-set attitude.” Women of all walks of life seem to agree.
